Depending on what you want to see and do, exploring the city can take from a few hours to a whole day. You can save money by visiting Bilbao independently rather than opt for the ship’s excursions. Taxis wait outside the cruise terminal when a ship is in port. Your cruise ship generally provides a shuttle service (not usually free) to Plaza Moyua in Bilbao’s centre, within walking distance of the Guggenheim. Once there alight at Moyúa metro station, look for the ‘Ercilla Guggenheim’ exit and walk to the Guggenheim. If you don’t use the shuttle, walk from the terminal to Neguri metro station and take Line 1 into Bilbao. From there you can get the metro into Bilbao.

The port authority provides a free shuttle service every 20 minutes from the terminal into Getxo, which has fine restaurants and a sandy beach. To visit Bilbao take a shuttle bus, metro or taxi. A little further afield – three kms away – is Unesco listed Vizcaya Bridge, the world’s oldest transporter bridge. Not really, though without straying too far from your ship you can reach the shops and restaurants in the marina beside the cruise terminal. Tourist information and free Wi-Fi is available at the modern cruise terminal.

Getxo is around 10 kms from the centre of Bilbao. Ships dock at one of three berths in the affluent suburb of Getxo as they cannot navigate the Nervion river into the city. It’s a popular port with cruise lines Azamara, Regent Seven Seas, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean all call here. Although the Guggenheim is undoubtedly Bilbao’s top draw there are plenty of other temptations for cruise passengers, from galleries to explore and fabulous food to sample, palm tree lined promenades to stroll and great shopping to enjoy. That changed in 1997 with the opening of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum. Major Spanish port Bilbao was once an industrial city with little tourism.
